Chaos reigns

gw_really bad day by gemstar69
On Wednesday morning, we found out that my mother-in-law has pancreatic cancer that has metastasized in the bone.  In other words, FUCK.  Whilst they understand that it is bad and terminal, Rich and his sister are still been blithely “optimistic” about how long they have until they hear otherwise (her next appointment is on Wednesday when we should know more).  That is, they are talking about us all going home for Christmas.  His sister even mentioned five years, but a five year diagnosis is for localized pancreatic cancer, not metastasized.  I tried gently suggesting that he needs to plan taking himself and Audrey home in the next two months if he wants to see her healthy, but yeah, he’s not doing anything until he hears back on Wednesday.  I feel like I’m being a big meanie but I just don’t want him to leave it too late.  Not that we can actually afford flying home, but that is another matter.

I nearly got scammed out of a large sum of my company’s money by a very effective gentleman claiming to be our company’s CEO.  Thankfully there were enough red flags for me to say “screw confidentiality, I’m not taking the flak for this.”  It is one of those things where in hindsight you go, well of course it was a scam, but he was really good.  He also hit the UK office and got them all in a tizz too.  I found out today that our real CEO has cancer too.

Mum’s birthday was on Thursday and they both sound old.  This is sad.

It was also the second anniversary of my brother’s bike accident.  Physically he is probably fitter these days that many of his other 50+ peers (yay!), but his memory shot.  Sigh.

Also, my brother-in-law is still missing.  That’s 3 and a half months.  Apart from the emotional toll on the family, my sister is financially screwed because they organized their accounts so that they need each other to get to the money.
I have internal discipline issues I have to deal with.  When you work in a team of four people, this is a real drag.

And to top it all off, I just realized that Assassins Creed: Unity will only be available for the PS4, not the PS3.

Piss off world, I need a drink.

Rich is correcting a student's MA thesis.  He is messaging me quotes.

"Cock fighting also represents a pastime which is highly male-dominated and women are merely allowed to be passive spectators and are not allowed to handle the cocks."

"On the male side, the language of everyday moralism was shot through with roosterish imagery and the cock owner spent much time caring for the cock, such as grooming them, feeding them, trying them out or just admiring them."

In breaking news...

Well, I've now educated myself (probably along with all the world's news readers) about how to pronounce Ougadougou.

A stream of consciousness hello

ad_happylucille by musguita
So, it is my first day back in the office after two weeks off looking after Audrey.  Kids are hard frickin' work, don't ya know.  Didn't go anywhere or do anything, but it is also kind of nice just to not be at a computer the whole time.  The last few days were really hot, so I've been running around in a bikini and joining in in water fights with the neighbourhood kids.  Also got her to give up her dummy, so that was a bonus.
Work is interesting in that many things were left in an odd state of limbo in my absence.  The first rattlings of a power play were I would come out the big winner if it comes off were happening on my last day, but in no way initiated by me (and in fact, from a very unexpected corner).  Needing to play some gentle politics in the meantime to fake looking like I can take on the extra responsibility.  Trying to not fall back into the old rut that just makes me depressed and non-productive.  We shall see.

We got an absolute shitload of rain this morning, but it is supposed to start being hot* again tomorrow.  Except now I'm stuck in a non-air-conditioned office.  Woe.

*The numbers are never that big, but the humidity round these parts can be brutal.

I can only assume I am getting black, whether I like it or not.

I had hoped to maybe update before I went to bed, but I spent too much time catching up on everything else that my chronic sleep deprivation is taking its toll and I don't know how coherent I can actually be.  Today was a really hard day, with Audrey waking up at 4:45am and things not getting better from there.  She starts daycare in July, and next week is her familiarization week, so both Rich and I are hoping that with a bit of routine and an actual chance to do something other than just keep her happy the whole time, maybe we can all

Pain in the neck

ad_happylucille by musguita
So annoying. My upper back and neck pain has been getting progressively worse to the point where I am now waking up with headaches.  Yesterday I tried to get an appointment with the physio, but could get one until Monday.  Now that appointment has been cancelled and I have to wait until next Thursday.  I think my spine might snap in two before then. Grumble, grumble.

We have daycare for Audrey, and she will start in July (with an initiation week beforehand). I'm trying to negotiate with work to come back full time early, but they are worried there isn't enough work to do. Really need the money, damn it.  I took her to a new kindercafé today, and she was sitting in amongst a group of kids probably 6-8 months, and she got to be the bully for once. Fun times.

Hark! It awakes...

Jealous of Tyrion

ad_happylucille by musguita
It's that time of year where the white fluffy pollen is flying around and it looks like it is snowing outside. My sinuses hate me.

And I've forgotten everything else I wanted to say.

Is that a tumbleweed in here?

ad_happylucille by musguita
The month of non-stop public holidays is over. So, once again, I am going to endeavour to be more on the ball regarding updating.  I need to develop some strategies or something.  Part of the problem is, of course, that it has been such a busy year, and there are actually lots of things to talk about, that I just get so caught up in "where do I start?" that it becomes overwhelming and I say nothing.  So bugger it, I'm just going to forget linear time and just do whatever pops into my head at the time.  If there is anything that I've mentioned or hinted at that you are actually interested in, let me know, because then I know to prioritize those stories.

In the briefest of summaries, the last year has seen:
- privately selling our flat
- the birth of Audrey Olivia
- moving into our new house
- the 6 week visit of the in-laws
- returning to work part-time when Audrey was 10 weeks old, to pay for the new house
- mum collapsing a couple of times and getting a pacemaker
- my brother being hit by a car when on his bike and nearly dying; still in rehab (although at home since Christmas)
- travelling home to Australia for Christmas
- my sister's perseverance
- Audrey's approaching first birthday
- persistent sleep deprivation
